Ultrahigh peak power production from compact short-pulse laser systems

چکیده

Introduction of chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) enabled the latest revolution in production of high peak powers from lasers through amplification of very short (femtosecond) laser pulses to pulse energies previously available only from long-pulse lasers. CPA has rapidly bridged the gap from its initial modest demonstrations to multi-terawatt and petawattscale systems in research facilities and universities, as well as numerous lowerpower scientific and industrial applications.

Characterization of an Ultrahigh Peak Power XeF ( C + A ) Excimer Laser System

The gain characteristics of an electron-beam pumped XeF(C -+ A ) excimer amplifier operating in the bluegreen spectral region were investigated for several laser pulse lengths. Saturation energy densities of 50 and 80 mJ/cm2 were measured for injected laser pulse durations of 250 fs and 100 ps, respectively. A gain bandwidth of 60 nm was observed with 100 ps pulse injection. Using an optimized ...

Plasma-based generation and control of a single few-cycle high-energy ultrahigh-intensity laser pulse.

A laser-boosted relativistic solid-density paraboloidal foil is known to efficiently reflect and focus a counterpropagating laser pulse. Here we show that in the case of an ultrarelativistic counterpropagating pulse, a high-energy and ultrahigh-intensity reflected pulse can be more effectively generated by a relatively slow and heavy foil than by a fast and light one. This counterintuitive resu...

A Monolithic Thulium Doped Single Mode Fiber Laser with 1.5ns Pulsewidth and 8kW Peak Power

Here we report a compact monolithic 2000nm pulsed laser with a single spatial mode output, ~1.5ns pulse duration, 8kW peak power and >200mW average power at 20 kHz repetition rate. The gain-switched laser, consisting of a pair of fiber Bragg gratings and 0.5m of thulium-doped single cladding fiber, was core pumped by a high peak power pulsed 1.5 m laser. When the input pulse energy of the 20 kH...

Observation of Raman Gain in Reduced Length of Bismuth Erbium Doped Fiber

Raman amplification of a 49 cm Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) as a nonlinear gainmedium based erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is reported in new and compactdesign in near infrared spectral regions. The bismuth glass host provides theopportunity to be doped heavily with erbium ions to allow a compact optical gain fiberamplifier design by using reduced fiber length and the 1480...

Ion Production with a High-power Short-pulse Laser for Application to Cancer Therapy

Ion production process with a high-power (~50TW) short-pulse (20fs) laser is to be utilized as a compact injector of the synchrotron for cancer therapy. In the scheme, an RF voltage with the frequency of 160 MHz is applied to the laser produced ion-beam within the energy space to reduce the momentum spread to ±1%, which is further cooled down to ±0.1 % by an electron beam cooling to realize nee...
